The EBEL 1911 Chronograph with El Primero movement was launched in 1982. It was a bold a spirited revival of the dormant El Primero movement and embodied the popularity of EBEL at the time. This move was later followed by Rolex (1987) and is more popularly known for it.
The 1911 Chronograph was popularised by the TV show Miami Vice and often nicknamed the Sonny Crockett (played by Don Johnson) for its lead role character who famously wore a gold version.
Founded in 1911, the brand name EBEL represents the initials of its founders Eugène Blum & Alice Lévy as "Eugene Blum et Levy"
In the 1970's, at the height of the quartz crisis, their grandson Pierre-Alain had taken over and was using their fully integrated manufacture to not only make watches for Cartier, but it provided movements to Gerald Genta for watches like the Bulgari Tubogas.
