The IW3755 with its charcoal color zirconium oxide case, an early ceramic material, was launched in 1986. A revolutionary watch for the time and debated as the first ceramic wristwatch (with Rado), it was without a doubt the first ceramic perpetual calendar chronograph.
The IWC Da Vinci Perpetual Calendar Chronograph was launched in 1985 (Ref. IW3750) under the helm of Günter Blümlein, IWC's CEO at the time. Head watchmaker Kurt Klaus developed a new type of mechanically programmed perpetual calendar module that was conceived with just 82 components. For the first time in a perpetual calendar, all adjustments – from the four-digit year to the moon phase – could be handled via the three o'clock screw-down crown. IWC added in something called the "century slide" which advances once every hundred years. It remains an iconic design of IWC from the 1980's with its hinge lugs, mushroom pushers and screw down crown. It was discontinued in 2003.
