Following the success of the Omega Speedmaster becoming known as the ‘moonwatch’ in 1969 and remaining the choice of NASA and its astronauts, the 1970’s began a series of prototype projects. Commonly known as the Alaska Project I, II, and III from 1970-1978, several prototype cases and dials were officially made for NASA by Omega, but did not, on the other hand, transfer to being retailed thus after in any official capacity. It is speculated, however, that several components likely made their way into retailer hands as NASA only used small quantities and Omega was probably left with stock at the factory.
The present watch is a combination of a Prototype case from the early 70’s, a Cal. 861 movement and a 1978 ‘Radial’ dial, without a clear trace of where they were assembled, but could have presumably been either NASA or made from prototype parts sold unofficially. This unique prototype is historically significant and is a testament to the amazing partnership between Omega and NASA.
