NOTES: The Cartier Tank Chinoise was introduced in 1922 by Louis Cartier as a distinctive variation of the iconic Cartier Tank. Its design reflects the early 20th-century European fascination with Asian aesthetics, expressed through prominent horizontal brancards at the top and bottom of the case that evoke the structural beams of traditional Chinese architecture.
While retaining classic Cartier elements such as Roman numerals, blued steel hands, and a cabochon-set crown, the Tank Chinoise stands apart for its bold, architectural framing of the dial. Produced only intermittently and in relatively small numbers, examples from the early 1970s are particularly notable as they date from the final period of production before the Cartier family relinquished control of the company in the mid-1970s, marking the end of an important chapter in the maison’s history. |
